Last spring, a mid-sized software company tried a four-day work week for three months, without reducing employee pay. Under the new schedule, most teams worked Monday through Thursday and took Friday off, though a few customer-support employees rotated their day off to keep the office covered throughout the week. Before the trial began, managers worried that a shorter week would mean less work getting done, so they tracked project deadlines closely during the trial. To their surprise, most teams met their deadlines at roughly the same rate as before, and a company survey found that employees reported feeling less tired and more focused during the four days they worked. A few managers noted that meetings became shorter and more organized, since teams no longer had an extra day to postpone decisions. Not every part of the company benefited equally: the customer-support team said the rotating schedule made it harder to coordinate handoffs between shifts. After reviewing the results, the company decided to keep the four-day schedule for most departments while giving the customer-support team the option to return to five days if they preferred.

A city government recently began allowing residents to keep beehives on apartment rooftops, reversing a decades-old rule that banned beekeeping within city limits. The change came after a small group of hobbyist beekeepers presented data showing that urban bee populations had been declining even faster than bee populations in rural areas, partly because city residents had no legal way to help. Under the new rules, residents must register their hives with the city, keep them at least three meters from the edge of a roof, and complete a short training course on hive safety. Within the first year, more than two hundred rooftop hives were registered, and city parks reported a noticeable increase in flowering plants being pollinated. Some residents initially worried about being stung while using nearby balconies, but city officials said reported incidents remained very low because bees generally avoid humans unless their hive is directly disturbed. Local honey producers have also begun selling rooftop honey at weekend markets, giving the program an unexpected economic benefit alongside its environmental goal.
